The Lefty's Deceiver Fly Pattern

The deceiver pattern is one of the best known and oldest fly patterns in saltwater fly fishing. The pattern was created by Bernhard "Lefty" Kreh and to this day still proudly carries his name as people commonly refer to it as Lefty's Deceiver.

This pattern has many strengths and benefits:

Highly adaptable - The pattern can be used to imitate a specific species of bait fish, a category of bait fish (ex: green bait, blue bait, etc.), or a general bait fish imitation. Even Lefty says there is no one style or pattern. Most recently, freshwater fisherman have begun using "tiny" deceivers for trout and have been well rewarded!
So Versatile - Deceivers take fish everywhere. Fresh or salt, bay or ocean or lake, day or night, the deceiver is effective.
A Tough Tie - The fly's design makes it very durable. It can take the punishment of big game fish, even toothy critters, over and over without the need to put on a new fly after each fish. That's not to say it's indestructible, just that a deceiver can usually last a longer time than some other more delicate patterns.
It's Aerodynamic! - No matter how big the deceiver fly is, the very shape of a deceiver makes for a lower profile when casting. This translates into a longer cast than you could get with some other patterns of similar size.
